Pictures of Love

May 8, 2008 · 1 Comment

“But, the greatest of these is Love….” - Paul the Apostle on the supremacy of divine love, 56AD

Daniel and family- the brightness of African love and simplicity

The greatest liberty I ever experienced was the Love of God. It makes me cry, not for sadness but for joy. His love makes me grateful and desiring to love him more fully. Friend, Jesus is enamored by you- you are in His thoughts and desires. Everytime I revisit this living truth I am reminded for the most important reason for living. Jesus told us that divine love would be His witness through us, to the nations of the world (the Gospel of John, the book of 1 John) One of the earliest accounts of God’s covenant love (’chesed’ Hebrew) is during Moses’ encounter on the Mountain in Exodus 33-34).

Joseph and company- the joy of just liking people

Jesus loves you and I so much. Though I grew up in the church, I never knew this for many, many years. I thought God was a taskmaster who was often disappointed at my behavior, attitudes and sin. I never could imagine that He not only loved me, He liked me and this divine affection is what drove the Father to send Jesus to the earth..

Tanzanian Children, 2008

Do you want to make someone’s day? Just take a moment and listen to them…

I don’t want to waste many words on this precious, glorious love this morning. Let me agree with other wise men- Gospel writers and apostles, ‘Lord let your love flood my life and relationships. It takes your power to even understand Your Love- then Lord pour out your Spirit of power and love. Let your love wash away insecurities, fears, slander and accusations. Make us perfect in Your love’ - Friend I believe there is divine Love that will flood your being and renew your spirit today! (recommended reading: (Ephesians 3, Phillipians 1:8-11)

Love is a language understood by all- Could this be one of Heavens’ best secrets? (Rex with schoolboy)

Trailer/container in Tanzania. IHOP KC (International House of Prayer) began in a trailer. Only labors of love can endure the humility of small beginnings… which are so easy to overlook with disdain. Many join a ministry when it is ‘recognized and sucessful’- few are tempted to join during the first years amidst the fires of vital testing and criticism.

The Warriors of Restoration

April 21, 2008 · No Comments

Airstrip in the center of Serengeti National Park, Tanzania 2008

Peter in Acts spoke about the return of Jesus and the beginning of the ‘times of restoration of all things.’ Once we realized that God is committed to ‘process’ we begin to see our lives and those around us, in a new and hopeful light.

The earth will be filled with His glory- how is this going to happen? He is going to use you- us! Since the beginning, we see Jesus is committed to transforming the earth.- This is why Jesus himself said to preach the gospel to every creature.

14 For the earth will be filled

With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord,

As the waters cover the sea.

-Habakkuk 2:14

Interesting, that in several places throughout Scripture, Jesus’ throne is set upon ‘a sea of glass, as clear as crystal. In fact in Exodus 24:10 it says “Under God’s feet it was paved like sapphire stone- like the heavens in clarity.” Its as if God placed the elements of heaven on the earth, to remind us of our true purpose when we lose our focus.

My friends, I take the blue sky, blues river, lakes and oceans as prophecy: the inevitable is that the knowledge of God will abundantly thrive in the earth. We are told that faith is ’substance’- the same with the knowledge of God. That substance that the Bible says paves the way before His Throne- the sapphire colored sea of glass. God planned it before hand, that the blue waters and sky would exist in this world as a prophecy to remind the earth that restoration is coming!

This cannot happen in a vacuum- did Jesus come in a vacuum, a perfect environment? Did he wave a magic wand and fix all the problems, VIOLATING HUMAN FREE WILL AND LOVE? Never, and never will He. Being a true lover, he has no desire to force people to love him, any more than you desire your wife to love you under compulsion and fear. Friend, what a powerful revelation- God chooses to share his work with us on the earth- the work of restoring peoples lives, the environment, government, the arts, education, music and all other facets of society to their God intended purpose. He is waiting to be ‘invited’ into these areas of society-thats right, God himself cannot live inside of a Sunday church service- He’s too vast and magnanimous.

14 May the Lord give you increase more and more,

You and your children.

15 May you be blessed by the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

16 The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’S;

But the earth He has given to the children of men.

-Psalm 115:16

Masai tribesman inside the Serengeti, 2008

This is why Jesus came to earth- God could have whispered one word to fix problems/sin on the earth.

Being entirely true, His new covenant doesn’t cancel the ‘old covenant’- I mean the NT is completely built on

its foundation- Jesus said this that all the Law and prophets point to ME-this is far from the mainstream

view that the OT doesnt matter, etc- God cannot lie by ‘undoing’ or hating His previous revelation.

Jesus was as much a part of the OT as the NT- Jesus said in the gospel of John, “Abraham saw my day and

was glad!”

Why not now- the earth groans- the land wants to rejoice and it can only rejoice in righteousness, generosity- the glory. People are longing to be restored into diginity, love and their place before God.

18″For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”
-Roman 8:-18

The greatest sinners become the greatest lovers- this is God’s trademark. The most depressed can become the most inspirational. The most proud can be the most humble . The most carnal can be changed into the most spiritual. That is the Bible biographies, in summary.- Moses, Paul, Abraham and David… and many more experienced restoration of their soul. Those who fall to the greatest depths can also be restored– and ascend to the greatest heights in God’s grace. Reading the Bible through God’s lens of restoration causes many things to make ’spiritual’ sense. Ectasy and joy will flood your spirit when you realize the amazing invitation to partner with God in his work of breathing life back into Creation. We can be off for 50 years but get on track in one moment- I would hate to carry some of my (current) problems with me after the grave. I am counting on grace to transform me and make me a warrior who fights to restore other people. No one is ever to far off- no one has ever gone too far away from God- we can be restored in one moment. Let us go onto give many people their dignity, purpose and fiery place with Jesus Christ. What can be more fun?

Galatians 6:1-

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore (restoration warriors) such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.”

The Winds of Change

April 14, 2008 · No Comments

Change is coming and some have said “change is here to stay.” What does this look like?

Joseph was given a very powerful dream in Genesis 37 of the Bible.

“Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers: and they hated him even more” (Genesis 37:5 and 11)

Have you ever had hidden desires and dreams that you want to see fulfilled? A special job or work position, a promotion in your profession, drawing art or creating music, flying an airplane, or some other dream.

Have you ever shared your deep desire/dream with a brother, only to have them ‘hate you even more?” You opened up your inner most secret and had them ‘rejected’ and felt misunderstood by someone close- a brother, a friend or someone from your family. These are some important lessons we can learn from the life of Joseph:

  • Don’t tell your dream to the wrong people- they will accuse you of selfish ambition and become envious (Genesis 37:11)- This is not unusual or strange, but a normal response when you tell your aspirations to people, so don’t be shocked when they don’t understand or appreciate your dream.
  • Don’t tell your dream at the wrong time- wait until the right time and it will be very clear. Later, when Joseph was in 2nd command of Egypt all his brothers knew the dream was from God- Joseph did not have to try to convince them.
  • Hold onto your pearls until the right time-not all people are worthy and can handle your precious secrets, dreams, and aspirations. Even if you did tell a secret, dream or vision prematurely,-it is still valid, precious and will be fulfilled. God’s word is true even if not recognized or appreciated by your friends and family. Many people give up on their own “dream’ and this is tragic. Many of God’s prophetic promises are conditional (I will share more on this in later posts)- they require a faithful and wholehearted devotion to Jesus in order to be fulfilled (this doesn’t mean God leaves no room for mistakes- avoid this kind of perfectionism/legalism).

There are some other Bible truths that are so relevant- when your time has come to build, to transform, to grow and change interesting attitudes and problems arise. When change is in the air, resistance shows up! Whether your own ‘comfort zone’, people around you or even friends- resistance will arise. Opportunity, change and resistance are almost always found together.

“A great and effective door has opened to me, and there are many adversaries” (NIV “many oppose me”)

-1 Corinthians 16:9

That is why its so wrong to believe ‘When God truly gives you a purpose, He paves the way with red carpet, with provision and with no problems.” I have literally heard people say that, and its utterly wrong. When you are truly in God’s will, all hell usually breaks out around you and the most unlikely people begin to resist you. Here are some examples:

Nehemiah wanted to rebuild the great city of Jerusalem. Opposition arose and people laughed, mocked and hated Nehemiah. They vocalized it through insult, accusation and other forms of active opposition (Nehemiah 2:19, 4:1)

Brickmaker, Rift Valley 2005

Israel who had experienced unprecedented favor and victory was opposed by another king. King Balak hired a gifted psychic/medium Balaam to curse Israel and to disrupt God’s plan for Israel. This example is mentioned several times in the Old Testament and New Testament. You see, when you have favor and are pursuing God you will experience opposition. These are the winds of change meant to make us humble, prayerful and confident in God alone.

Some misinterpret the difficulty/change as “God hates me, why is my life so difficult?” Nothing could be more further from the truth- friends Jesus loves you and I! That is why He brings seasons of change, trials and problems. These important times are about teaching us that ‘its not about our gift, job, or profession’. It never was about that. Its about other people catching something, getting equipped and gaining encouragement from your life experience. One of the great lessons in our Christian life is to not look at outward situations/approval from others and learn ‘Its not I who live, Its Christ” (Gal 2:20) Joseph learned this lesson after many years. At the end of the story he is no longer talking about his purpose or dreams- he is just serving his brothers with joy and humility. This is a profound and deep change in Joseph (and any person for that matter). Its not about us- yet the Lord loves to share his ministry and work with us!

When Jesus declared his full mission to his disciples (many times throughout all the gospels) his own disciples protested and resisted- at best, His closest friends on earth misunderstood him. Jesus kept telling them that He ‘must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things and then die and be resurrected’- but they resisted Jesus. In the Gospel of John, Jesus’ own family said ’show yourself to the world-’– HIs mission was continually misunderstood by his own family. When God calls you for his purpose, people around you will ‘dispute’ your lifestyle and even say (like Joseph’s brother) that your dream or goal isnt valid or true. Some will accuse you of self ambition- mostly because they are stuck comparing their own life, situation or ‘fruit’ with those around them. The truth be told, most people on the earth look around at others in constant comparison and feelings of insecurity. Top fashion models and celebrities have confessed this on sitcoms and live interviews on national T.V.

Difficulty, change and trials bring the true essence of who we are to the surface. In my life, it brought the good and the bad- the grace of God caused me to flourish and abound at the same time revealing my weaknesses and insecurities. For example it brought anger (that was rumbling underneath) to the surface. When I was away from my family I realized what a gift they were to me and how important they are. I wanted to not give into the anger/frustration I felt when things didn’t go my way.

Change (like the present financial problems and mortgage crisis) has a way of solidifying what is really important from what is not important- in other words, vain ambitions, selfish desires give way to the well being of your family, friends, etc- In Kenya January 2008 through March 2008, this became obvious like helping other people, hiding people, saving people. Priorities that were once forgotten resurface: safety, knowing who your friends and enemies are become very clear.

Whether we like it or not (and I tend to not ‘like’ it) criticism, opposition, and difficulties purify us. These are the essential winds of change that are blowing across the globe right now. In Africa it looks like war, in Asia its a food crisis/bird flu, in the Americas its disunity and financial crisis. To the church global, the wind reveals all the props that we placed our confidence in. From money to jobs to presidential candidates- even putting our hope in churches! When they don’t work out like we thought, people fall away and give up on Christ.

Jesus told His church that He was going to fulfill His mission and vision and they clearly rose up to oppose Jesus. They thought the death and resurrection (His mission) was irrelevant, until they touched his resurrected body. They completely misunderstood his purpose because their value system was rooted in temporary results and they didn’t have a clue about God’s eternal purpose- multi generational (passing the torch and wisdom to the next generations). This is why so many businesses and ministries fail- they have no heirs, sucessors like Jesus did. Their vision or goal is only the “here and now”- to make some money, become famous or get recognition. The proof? Most businesses, ministries and churches fall apart when the leader passes away. That is the difference between Moses and Joshua, Paul and Timothy and Jesus and His followers. Your ministry is only as effective as those you are able to release, and catapult them on into the next levels of effectiveness, character and grace. Thats why Paul said there are “Many teachers but few fathers…. and I am your father” (1 Cor 4:15) he said to the Corinthians. The same is true today- but this is about to change.

Consider how Jesus’ own church opposed Him and His purpose:

“Peter said, ‘Lord, this shall not happen to you!’ Jesus said… ‘Get behind me satan- you are an offense to Me, for you are mindful of the things of men, not of God!’” Matthew 16:22-23

Change is here to stay. People resist change- its called ‘the prison of familiarity’. Instead of bucking the system (God’s ways) lets embrace them. Daniel was demoted and thrown into a pit full of lions. Joseph was demoted and thrown into prison. Moses was a brilliant leader in Israel and had his own brother and sister grumbling and complaining against him- the Lord took it personally and confronted Miriam and Aaron-

“Why were you then not afraid to speak against my servant Moses” said the Lord. (Numbers 12: 8)

The early disciples and church was so convinced that God was in the midst of change, hardship and trials they began to confess a saying to help and strengthen the church:

“They strengthened the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying ‘‘We must through many tribulations enter the Kingdom of God..’” Acts 14:22 (enter= experience, be transformed, understand Jesus’ experience)

Are you ready to pursue God’s purpose in your family? Are you ready to pay the price? Are you ready for the opposition that is common to every real Christian and true leader? God’s grace can empower and overshadow you like Mary the mother of Jesus. God alone can become your help and strength- no human is worthy of such a place- Read Psalm 91. God is for you friend, who can be against you- If God is for you….. why even listen to the naysayers, accusers who are abundant in every church, business, and country of the world? If God spoke to you like Joseph, Nehemiah and Jesus, why entertain any contrary voices? The devil will always point out weakness as a means to discourage, bring depression and cause you to give up. The Holy Spirit knows you are weak and he intends to use it to do the Father’s work and transform you into Christ’s beautiful likeness- confidence in God, full of love and power, and humble yet inflinching towards His will.

What a radical opportunity!- You are so loved by God, He likes you! This is a mystery of God-the suffering and the glory, the trials and the joy.

“Looking unto Jesus…. for the Joy set before Him endured the Cross (the suffering and awefulness of the experience) Hebrews 12:2

“The Lord loves those He disciplines…” Hebrews 12:6

No hardship or no trouble equals no discipline= ‘no love from God’. Have you ever seen a teenager whose parents never spent any time disciplining them? Haven’t you seen how much they wonder ‘if they are noticed, loved or valued?’ Go to the ghetto/wrong side of the tracks in your town and observe.

Be encouraged. Laugh and enjoy God’s interesting and wonderful value system. He will never leave you or forsake you friend. Why do you think you are reading this post?

I want to leave you with this thought- “without a vision people perish (lose restraint)”- the Book of Proverbs says. Did you know that your vision affects countless thousands of people- your children, your family, your neighborhood and the following generations. Thats right- loving one widow or one orphan can affect a nation or continent, forever. Loving your family properly determines the outcome of your children and their children for ages to come. Your vision counts, your purpose is profound- and not fulfilling it is costly.

Love conquers fear- miracle stories not heard on the nightly news

March 13, 2008 · No Comments

John and Sharon Senin want to especially thank: Keith and Stephanie Haas, Jack and April Lagrow, the Knox’s, my Pastor Chuck Cushman, Ponmile in UK and Nigeria, E.N. Kure in Jos, Tom and Melissa Brake, Dusty and Kelsey Jones, Pastor Meshack Gachago, Pastor Julius Chepsat, Steve Thompson and Morningstar, Marty the intercessor,Eric W. and Intro leadership, John Gross, Lloyd Phillips and so many others from the ’shed’ in Whitefish, MT. So many times we felt your love and intercession- hey, lets continue to do this thing together! Through your relationship, I have learned about partnership and love- thats a hard lesson for an independant contractor! We owe all of you a great, big ‘Thanks!’- Thanks, thanks, thanks so much- may this year bring you multiplication in your resource, life focus and ministry, and the clarity and love that burns in your wonderful hearts! True love is true ministry- its as simple as that. Thanks for being true friends for so many years.

I will place the Kenya video of testimonies and IDP camp on this blog or on a new Myspace account- it should be ready in the next week or so.

It has been our best ministry trip ever. Rex and I prayed and ministered in: Moshi, Arusha, Shinyanga, Mwanza, Musoma and Mugumu, Tanzania. Rex returned to the USA- he was a tremendous blessing and help to all of us. I traveled to Nairobi, Meru, Karatina, Nakuru, Eldoret, Saccho, Tenges, Barwessa and other regions of Kenya. There was alot of time to pray, encourage and assist people hurting by the recent crisis/tribal war in Kenya.

We have been able to interview several members of our team in Rift Valley who experienced amazing things during the frightening political crisis. For example, we went with our team to another part of Rift Valley (the woman who lost her husband/ mentioned in the post ‘Experience Christ deep emotions and purpose’) and we met with the bereaved lady. We were shocked that she was so forgiving and peaceful- yet she was honest about how difficult it was to overcome the tragedy and bitterness of such a terrible experience. All these things have been recorded and will be released within one month:

-Visit to the largest IDP camp in Kenya- testimonies, stories and videos of the children affected.

-Testimonies from our team in Kenya- personal miracles, escapes, being ‘hidden’ in homes attics, hiding in forests and bushes, uncommon heroism/love, tribes assisting one another to safety, burnt buildings and the magnitude of Rift Valley affected and much more.

These personal stories from our friends (which we have known and worked with/assisted/ministered with for the last 8 years) are completely inspiring. We are not trying to ‘capitalize’ on the aweful nature of the news, but instead show the clear fact that God helped people escape death, help give courage amidst racial hatred, and preserved children/families as a testimony to His great power and Name. Some of the stories remind us much of persecuted groups through history- people like the Jews who were hidden (at great risk to their hosts) during WWII. Such stories and facts completely show us the season of time we are living in- the most difficult time in history is also the greatest time of revelation, God’s power and grace, and seeing the Holy Spirit transform people, communities, and even ancient tribal hatred. Isaiah 60:1-4 mentions this amazing paradox:

“Deep, gross darkness will cover the earth….. but my glory (heavy, weighty, notable Presence of Christ, literal light) will appear and rest upon my people..”

Both Daniel and Paul echo the same prophetic truth about the irony of such times- ‘the best of times and the worst of times.’ This is why Jesus said ‘You are the city on a hill, a light that should never be hidden.’ Matthew 5:14-16

“And your glorious destiny is to know the fullness of God’s Person, and shine like stars in a wicked and dark time…”

-Daniel 7:18, 7:27 & 12:3 Philippians 2-3

This has been our most awesome experience- I don’t want to exaggerate anything, so I will let you view/download the video so you can see for yourself (to be posted/available within one month). Like us, you will gain incredible grace hearing the stories, fighting back tears of sorrow and of joy, and realizing our resurrected Christ is still present saving people, revealing His life and purpose and forgiving the worst sins that men commit like beasts. Yet these days yield the greatest opportunities to know God’s power, love and resurrection life. You and I- we were born for such a time as this!

Experience the Christ of Deep emotion and purpose

February 29, 2008 · No Comments

We have stood with amazement at the course of events in Kenya in the last few weeks. The country stood at the very edge of civil war- as we traveled the country we heard common stories that local militia’s were arming themselves, preparing for a much anticipated civil war. Prayer and fasting was awoken during this crisis time. The church was deeply divided- even some pastors in cities were marching with arms, during the swirl of violence and ethnic hatred. Even as I type this message, 2 Kenyan army soldiers are only a few meters away, checking their email. Things were tense and fearful in Kenya, prior to the power sharing peace deal, signed by President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga. As the signing commenced, the communities around Kenya rejoiced. Many innocent people in Kenya have lost their lives- the impoverished have suffered. Yet this peace deal has given Kenya and our intercessors hope. We realized that our crisis was beyond the ability of conflict negotiators to solve. Arrogance and demanding attitudes- even insults were destroying the peace talks, which occurred in the last few weeks. Yet, hope has prevailed. I don’t want to demean Kofi Annan and Condileeza Rice, thank God for their efforts. They were a great help to Kenya in her time of need.

We recognize that God prevailed- yes, the Prince of Peace is the One to bring lasting peace to the entire globe. Kenya was on the precipice of civil war with ethnic hatred at an all time high. Old wounds and injustices helped to fuel the warmongering. Now, a political solution has bought us time- we must seize this time and pray that God’s kingdom come with true justice, peace and prosperity to lift those who struggled to even feed their family in Kenya. Let us joyously celebrate (and we are in Kenya, eating mbuzi and enjoying the breakthrough)- but let us also continue to offer up prayers as we see here in 1 Timothy 2:1-

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

8I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting”

God is the glorious Burning God of Power- yet as a true lover and husband, we find out that he prizes the free will and choice of men. This is truly wonderful, upendwe wa Mungu (Beloved of God). Isn’t our God loving and considerate? Prayer is the loving language of partnership, sharing and deep emotion. He is the true lover and partner that we all long to be united with. He invites us to partner and share in His feeling and plans for restoring the earth- did you know that this Gentle and Humble God of Fiery Love is waiting to be desired, invited and enjoyed in His Creation? All true lovers want to be desired, enjoyed and to share their secrets- people complain and blame God for problems, bloodshed and hatred. How can we blame the Prince of Peace who gave His life freely for us, so that we could choose the way of life, peace and love? Often people accuse God of being passive and distant, when instead it is us- we don’t care about Him until we are suffering, in need and distressed. We act as ‘gods’ who don’t even need anything- until crisis times come that are far beyond human wisdom, money and effort to resolve.

Your life takes on new meaning with God’s purpose of restoration

Acts 3:21

“Jesus-whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.”

Yes, everything will be restored- nations, continents, tribes, resources, oceans, rivers and the environment. Heaven is not some distant place far away, but the destiny of earth is to inherit heavens harmony- life, peace, joy, and love through Jesus Christ. He is the Mediator/reconciler between Heaven and Earth, and desires union with the 2 realms, just as a marriage between a man and a woman. (Revelation 21:1-5). This is why Jesus prayed ‘Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven’. (Matt 6:10 Ephesians 1:10)

Jesus has feelings about the sufferings of people and creation. Read John 11:35 for starters. Then Exodus 3:7 and also 2 Kings 20:5. In another place He wipes away the tears of those who suffer and even ‘saves your tears in a bottle’. Find those Scriptures and you will come to know the God is whose image you are made.

We will go into another part of Rift Valley tomorrow. One of my pastor’s acquaintances experienced horrible trauma (we are hearing many stories, yet this one has been exceedingly heart breaking). A father was taking his young daughter to school in a region that was tribally intermixed. It turns out that a particularly violent group (called Mungiki) had set a trap to kill the family, on the way to school. They had been using the school’s principal, who assured the father and daughter that the roads were safe that day. It turns out that the principal was lying- in fact he was taking the family right into a trap. When the family arrived near the school, a gang of Mungiki were prepared to kill- a revenge killing because so many from their own tribe had been displaced and killed in the region.

The man got out of the vehicle, and seeing the mob he ran. From behind him he heard the voice of his daughter yelling ‘Daddy, why are you now leaving me?’ The father stopped and came to his senses. He returned to the mob and pleaded with them, crying out ‘please take my life and let the life of my daughter go.’ They did just what he asked, cutting him to pieces in front of the girl, as she ran into the forest and escaped with her life.

Please pray for us as we go to pray with them tomorrow and comfort them. We plan to give them some money- actually several people have given them love gifts. We do know that God is greater than death and suffering, for He was resurrected brilliantly after His own gory suffering and death. He will keep his word,

“God is not a man, that He should lie…”(Numbers 23:19 / Titus 1:2)

There is a new creation that we are born from (citizens of) — this is our Good News through Jesus Christ. This world will not always be a place of suffering, selfishness, hate, greed and bloodshed. God is waiting to give people a chance to fully volunteer and partner with Him. Who will feel the feelings of love and vision for restoration in North America, Africa, Europe and Kenya? Who will look at their children and grandchildren and envision them full of love, power, humility, ability to forgive- living intimately close to this Glorious Burning Lover, Jesus Christ? He is a Groom and He desires a Bride to share His plans of restoration and secrets with (Matt 25:1-13 Revelation 19:7-9) If we miss all the weddings of friends and family, we don’t want to miss being in His wedding. Like Daniel, John the Apostle and so many, they found the life of friendship with God- intimacy, sharing secrets, revelation and even changing history through intercession. We cannot afford to miss these opportunities with God- they come once in a lifetime.

Saving the family of Musa Kamau

February 21, 2008 · No Comments

We have known Musa since 2000, when I first came to Kenya. He lived in Rift Valley since birth more than 30 years ago.

His hometown was peaceful until the December 30th election results. That fateful day, rumours and plots were circulating. The Western part of Kenya was particularly angry with the president, and therefore every member of his tribe. Like the Jews (the most accurate analogy I could use for these events) this tribe was to be blamed for all the problems in Kenya since Kenya found independence in the 1960’s. Forget that the Kenyan economy was the strongest in East Africa in 25 years- forget all facts and statistics. The peace, unity and development would be forgotten overnight.

Musa didn’t go to church that day- something was in the air. As he told me the story, I knew exact locations, persons and circumstances. Musa had loving and committed friends from the rival political tribe- this was God’s grace for him, that eventually saved his family. Musa knew something might happen this day- he decided to take his family somewhere else encase he was right.

Hours later, youths broke into his house (shortly after the election results were announced). 20 plus people, including his neighbors were pillaging and vandalizing.

Fortunately Musa’s friend Koech was hosting his family- they sent a taxi to pick up his parents about 10km away. Together they gathered in a house, hosted by a person who was not dictated by people, advice or the growing crisis.

“I am with you to the end,” said Koech. “I can’t leave you now- I can’t betray you now- if they kill you, they will have to kill all of us” (Koech’s entire family). More than words, this was the power of Jesus Christ, just like his own life, death and resurrection. My friends there are times when God’s face is seen clearly, and the gospel is preached in action, true love and sacrifice. You wont hear these stories in the biased and corrupt media that seems to pervade our world with its perverseness and lies.

Koech hid them inside his house- then later, he was forewarned that people were coming to break inside his house, executing the refugees. Stealthy and wise, he hid the family outside in the forest/bushes, before calling the police to come and save Musa’s family.

I have difficulty communicating all the emotion, intensity and crisis of that day. I remember looking into the eyes of Musa yesterday, and realizing he had no bitterness and hatred. I was seeing real supernatural love, in fact Musa was telling me how he longed to return to the town and forgive people, even resettling there. Both Musa and Koech are models of supernatural love and courage, during difficult times. Koech risked his life to save Musa and his family- Koech loved even if it would cost his family’s lives.

Later the men confronted Koech- “Where is Musa Kamau and the family- hand them over and you will be saved! Don’t hand them over, and you will all die together!” About 100 youths were on his doorstep. Fortunately Koech was moving in great grace and wisdom, outmaneuvering the bloodthirsty youths.

The facts are crystal clear in Kenya- old wounds, extreme difference in tribal traditions and corrupt politicians on both sides contributed to the violence. They used anything- money, purchasing the media and even using Western influence to create anarchy by purchasing weapons. Assassins were awarded 4-10 dollars for murdering and displacing families in Rift Valley. It was an organized campaign, premeditated and professionally executed by politicians. This is why we can identify extreme bloodshed in certain areas like Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru and Mombasa. This is also why certain areas such as Central Province and many other areas were not even touched, and no lives were lost. The facts are crystal clear in Kenya and everyone knows it. Those who want power at all cost even love the bloodshed. We must pray for peace and wisdom for Kenya.

Without the help of the State sponsored military, 1000’s of more lives would have been killed. Fortunately the incumbent is a relatively peaceful leader. During the Moi era (the previous president) dissadent would have been squashed- people imprisoned, tortured and parliamentary powers confiscated. No such action has happened today- in fact, both sides are at the negotiating table. But the people in Kenya know the crystal clear truth. Everyone knows exactly what has happened and history will tell the truth. This is why there are almost 800,000 refugees, primarily from one tribal/language group (Bantu’s leaving Rift Valley/Western Province). Those who helped them are courageous indeed- There are other stories of the Bantu’s helping those from the rival tribes, we will save some stories for another time.

The story of our friends Musa and Koech is a true story of inspirational love and sacrifice. It is the story of Christian brotherhood- laying your life down for a friend whose tribe is being targeted for extermination. What we need to do is pray for honesty, forgiveness and God’s overwhelming power of love and grace. These supernatural virtues are the point of this story. Let us pray “Dear Jesus, help Kenya to overcome ancient wounds and hatreds. May Kenya move forward now in love, peace and forgiveness. May politicians and the power mongering be confounded and confused in Jesus name. May those who love to rape and pour innocent blood- may their schemes be exposed and may their power be stripped from them by Heaven and given to peacemakers, now in Jesus mighty name. Amen” I am on my way to speak to Koech, and excited to eat and drink his traditional food with him. Such brothers are an honor and celebration in Heaven- like Musa Kamau, the world is not worthy of them. (For our friends sake I have not used their real names).

Update from Tanzania

February 5, 2008 · No Comments

We are doing well in Tanzania. We have spent alot of time with our friends Leah and Lazaro, who attended IHOP- after they returned to Tanzania.

The church has spent alot of time interceding for God’s intervention during this difficult time in Kenya’s history. It has been wonderful to be with them every day, for they often spend an hour or more lifting up the nation of Kenya with heartfelt prayers of love and peace.

Pray is not ‘the only thing we can do’, we should say it is the best thing we can do.’ Not to seem trite or simplistic, but frankly many problems exist in this world (without a seeming conclusion, for now). Problems are coming, this is what we read at the end of the Book. Money can’t fix them, neither the United Nations or even most churches. Many things are coming to test all of us, and will we be ready? I dont think they are tests to ‘fail us’ but rather to help us, reveal how much we trust in weak things such as money, pride, recognition (even recognition in church life).

Well, why dont we agree with this great intercessor Jesus who prayed brilliantly , ”Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done- on earth as it is in Heaven… (let Heaven’s peace, joy, love and power now come upon who weary of their own ways- my paraphrase)

You know the rest of the prayer. He is the One this whole thing is about. We, along with the rest of the world are about to learn that life without Christ is meaningless, dreadful and painful. We dont have to wait to learn that lesson, however. It can be done… whenever any of us is ready, the Master says-

‘Come, you who are weary and heavy- I will give you rest! Take my yoke and learn of me… for I am gentle and humble in heart.- Matt 11:28 (God is gentle and yet Almighty!- and He loves to share himself with men!)

No wonder why all endeavors- work, achievement and even religious endeavors always end up in burn out, bitterness and competition/striving. Is this not basically a cause for war/hatred amongst people?

Augustine says ‘”Our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.” He must have also come to the ‘end’ of himself, and even the ‘end’ of religious works, no matter how good they were, yet busy, hurried and wearisome. Pray, fellowship with Christ, enjoying Him is the only solution for us. The more it becomes about Him, the more I rest and dont even take myself ‘too serious’. ‘Too serious’ is killing the church because its all about what people can do- thats right, its basic humanism with a religious face, running around scurrying to meet people’s needs, without a thought for Christ’s feeling, emotions and lovely heart. We will have no part of that, so help us God.

2-10-08  Additional thoughts: (Because of poor internet these posts go together)

In no ways, do we want to demean the seriousness of suffering people.  I dont want our friends and family to misunderstanda (And assume we are hard-hearted)- far from it, we have distributed gifts ranging from money to guitars to those who have nothing and can be responsible with it.

All we are saying, is that God is pre-eminent above human goodness. That is settled, forever.   And these trying times are about us waking up to those realities, living with an eternal hearts and eternal value system.  Many things will fail, but God’s love and power will never fail.  Men’s ideas and structures will collapse, we are told.  What we want is to be so sensitive to His wonderful Holy Spirit, that He may carry us however He desires. That we may be the ‘matunge’ the vessel that pours out the oil and the water of His Holy Spirit.  That is better than all other kinds of help.  Men’s help will pass away- even temporary humanitarian help is limited and passes away.  Yet the help of our God endures forever. To this we are bound, and to this gospel we preach, though it seems weak, impotent and foolish to many people.    Yet it is good news to all who are ready.

Thanks for your prayers.  I plan to be in Kenya within one week.  Thanks for you love, generosity and prayers!!

Fellow Kenyans wake up-the blood of the Innocent is crying out for Justice

January 31, 2008 · No Comments

You have probably seen or heard the news about Nakuru, this is the forth largest city in Kenya, and the gateway into the Rift Valley. Nakuru has in the last few weeks provided refuge for the many displaced families in the Rift Valley. Two days ago according to the news there was conflict between the Kikuyu and Kalenjin.

(1-25-0 8) I just got off the phone with my brother who works in Nakuru and lives on the outskirts of the City. He said they have not slept throughout the night; they have to stay up and keep watch. He is housing a few of his friends who come from the suburbs affected by the violence. He said that there were people dropped in Nakuru in big lorries to push the Kikuyu out of Nakuru. Most of these attackers came from other places and do not necessarily live there. I was shocked when he said that the mungiki- a violent Kikuyu sect- have in turn come into the city in large numbers from various places. I say the sect but there could be some who are not there, but the spirit in them is so terrible that anyone disagreeing can be killed, that means even converting into Christianity means one has chosen death. Hearing that they are protecting the Kikuyu is a shock, the spirit they carry with them is demonic and once they have drawn a weapon, they have to use it. My brother was on the streets yesterday when a man was shot by the police and he said they carried the body. He said it looks bad; the Kikuyu are many in Nakuru than they were in Western and have said they are not leaving. There was a curfew from 7pm to 7am, however, most people could not sleep, mainly men stayed up and women and children went to sleep. He was going to rest for a while in the morning.

Just for your information I am Kikuyu, I have seen and heard many things done and said in the past and now. I hear Kikuyu’s this, Kikuyu’s that… I was home in the 1992 and 1997 tribal clashes, we saw people carrying their few belonging they could savage come to our home town, they stayed in churches, stadiums, some found relatives while other were housed by well wishers. I am not home now but I feel the pain of my people-by my people I mean all Kenyans affected. I have lived in Kalenjin land, among the Mijikenda (means nine villages) in Mombasa and other tribes elsewhere, and all were peaceful and shared many things. I did my YWAM dts outreach in the interior Coastal tribes, there was peace. Never I have I seen anything like this, it is worse than ‘92 and ’97. It was the same for most of these displaced. They fed someone, employed someone, worked for someone, their children played together yet there were no differences then. But now someone sees the difference, the tongue yet they spoke Kiswahili to understand each other then, others even learnt the other tribe languages to fit. When we lived in Kabarnet, most people thought I was a Kalenjin, would I have survived is the question that keeps lingering my mind. Would someone have remembered I was “different”? One of friends had to leave, yet this the place he and his family have called home all their lives. They stayed at the police station after their apartment was looted. When we went home in 2006 we were there to witness their lovely wedding. It was beautiful, the cooking was done by many tribes together, there was a lot of dancing not by Kikuyu alone but all other tribes present-Kale’s, Kiks, Luhya’s, Luo’s, Kamba’s—among others. Our friend married a Kikuyu woman from near my home town, so when they were escorted by the police out of Kabarnet to Nakuru, thats after a few days at the police station, they headed to his wifes home where her parents welcomed them home and gave them a place to stay. Thank God there was a place peaceful to seek refuge. Thats a single story, how many others have no place to go to? The news is saying over 350,000.

When we talked to our Pastor, he said even the church could not protect anyone because anyone one sheltering a rival tribe would have their home burnt down. Later after Kibaki appointed the VP Kalonzo who is a Kamba, then the Kamba’s were in hot soup too. They looked at the second and third name on the ID card and knew what tribe one was from.

What makes us different? Blood? color? aha maybe I chose to be born in the presidents tribe? Or maybe I have received some acreage from him? maybe a job, maybe a place in the university???? Wait even when the president was a Kalenjin, this talk was still there—so what’s the deal devil? The devil is a killer, a thief and all he wants is to see no peace, he is destroying the liberty, peace, love and unity we have sing about in the national anthem. Tribalism is destroying my nation. That is why some people are so dis-hearted and will kill anyone including children as long as they are from the rival tribe. It’s the same spirit in all the killers and in the mungiki.

“I curse you spirit of death and shedding of innocent blood. I speak life”

Kibaki and Raila finally came together; let’s pray that something good will come up. Let us pray that the spirit of life would stay with us and that the spirit of death would depart, that there would be restoration of peace and the spirit of who we are,Kenyans, people who love one another and live beyond tribal lines. That when I go back home, I can live anywhere and not be afraid that someone is coming for my throat or my families.

Let us not concern ourselves with general statements made against ANY TRIBE. We have to stop encouraging this talk. We are Kenyans dealing with political things. Fighting over people who have someone to drive them home, security personnel, someone to open the gate, clean their car, house helps, some don’t know who washes their clothes… they sleep on a comfortable bed and don’t miss their dinner. Yet, we are sleeping hungry, not in the comfort of the place we once called home, but in a stadium, almost got shot in the riots by riot the police, itched eyes after teargas was thrown at us, have no blanket, have lost a wife or a husband or a child or a friend, a job, a business…

Many carry resentment and forgiveness but no one can force anyone to release something if they do not want to.

When praying for Kenya with the palm of my hands on the map of Kenya. I felt this: a tap on my clean shaved head right up on top, touched to feel it and these words came to my mind “this is like hitting the nail right on the head, when one hits the nail on the head, it shakes the surrounding and that is what it looks like. Anything that is not established and firm gets shaken, this is Kenya. Political occurrence like this shakes the foundations of unforgiveness, resentments and erupts doing a lot of damage.

Let us praying that this would not get ignored, but that we will take time to seek forgiveness and to forgive after all is over. Let us pray for peace. May be the end is with us!!!

(For sake of our friends protection, I have taken away their names)

Going to East Africa

January 7, 2008 · No Comments

We (John and Rex) are flying to Tanzania on January 11th. We will stay with our friends there and monitor the situation in Kenya. Right now, the Embassies are advising travelers to not use the International airport in Nairobi. After a few weeks or even one month I (John) will go into Kenya. We have many people we need to assist in Rift Valley, the primary epicenter of the humanitarian crisis.

These people have names, faces, smiles and great purpose for their lives. Thanks for your overwhelming response and generosity- I long to help our dear brothers and sisters who are now displaced and in need. We will be prepared to serve them any way we can. It will be an extreme time- keep us in your prayers!

(Thanks to the many who so generously gave! We have earmarked those gifts only for the displaced and suffering- they will be so appreciative. 1-11-0 8)

QUOTE FOR THE DAY:

“Just because you are good at spotting pride in someone else, does not automatically prove that you are humble.”

This is one of the great musician from our missions base here in Kansas City= Luke Wood.

Responding to the crisis in Kenya

January 4, 2008 · 1 Comment

We lived in the country of Kenya during the 2002 elections. The elections occured relatively peaceful and without the violence we now see currently in Kenya.
For the first time, we are taking donations to assist people for their critical needs- in places like Nakuru, Kabarnet, Nairobi and Eldoret. We have humanitarian staff and pastors on the ground that will distribute and funds we receive, earmarked for ‘Election Related Crisis.’ All of us in Kenya know friends and family who are displaced, therefore we take this responsibility in a very sober manner. Go to our ‘John and Sharon’ page to find out how to make a check donation- then send the check to us with a post it note that says ‘election related crisis’. 100 percent (thats right) goes to crisis related needs, food, medicine and displaced persons.

Last month, we (John and Sharon Senin/Shiloh House Mission) were able to send more than 2000 dollars to ministries/distribution centers in Kenya. (Ministries based in Nakuru and Kabarnet, which have received their own fair share of electoral violence and death). We are thrilled that we did this before the elections- banks and atms are almost shut down right now.
http://eastandard.net/news/?id=1143979891&cid=14

Thanks for being apart of this vital chain of assistance. We can say that people in Kenya owe you their lives. If there ever was a time to ask for donations for people who have names– not mere beauracracies-, people who we actually know, who are amidst the suffering chaos-some of them at police stations, some of them trying to help in the goverment)- Now is that time. We want to challenge those who ever thought they love Africa, to dig deep- many of you already have!– Hey we challenge you… outgive us during this worthy time of assisting the needy! If you feel like we are trying to provoke you… we are! I am sharing this dollar amount (not exact by the way) so as to provoke some ministries/people who say they love Africa/Kenya to now fulfill that love in a tangible way. Its not a boast, its a challenge. Do you love Africa, or just love the fad of being associated with Africa? Thats a question all of us (including myself) need to ask during this crucial time.

Sending money on our end is the easy part. What about being a humanitarian/distributor/helper, and you are despised by one group, in a ugly predicament comparable to helping Jews during the Nazi perpetrated genocide. The dynamics at work are not much different than Germany during WWII. The ministers on the ground in Kenya are putting their families and homes at risk, to reach out to the needy during this time.

You see in the end, its about the not so glorious, getting your hands dirty work of service… The things that are the most esteemed to God in heaven are often the least esteemed to men on earth. Men love titles, positions, places of honor… Jesus is the highest of all Kings, calling himself ‘meek and gentle hearted.’ He always takes the highest place because he always volunteers for the lowest place. But this call to service (service= ministry that fulfills through love) is the highest honor and joy in all of Heaven. This is why the whole world knows the name of Jesus Christ- haven’t you noticed that no other name/no other King evokes such polarity, such love/hate response from the hearts of men all over the earth?

This mystery of God becoming man, the King becoming a servant is a profound one that men and angels will not completely comprehend as they gaze upon Him, millions of years from now. In the ancient world, the courts of kings had astrologers. Of all the nations of the world, very few found the motivation to send ‘wise men’ to behold the baby Jesus in a humble manger. Three only, I think.

Post election violence in Kenya

January 3, 2008 · No Comments

Moments ago, we spoke on the phone with our pastor in Kabarnet, Kenya. He said that most of the Kikuyu tribe in the town, were being held at the police station, for that was the safest place for them. The Kikuyu tribe is the main tribe targeted by the violence (or those who host/help them), at this time, because the current incumbent Mwai Kibaki is from the Kikuyu tribe- this is a simplified way of describing a very complex problem. We were shocked to discover that there is so much fear, that the church is not able to host them.. for fear of repercussions. In Kisumu, foreigners (people not from the local Luo tribe) were forced out, violently- even Indians and Asians.

There appears to have been inconsistencies in the vote counting process. It appeared that the opposition candidate had won the elections… up until the 3rd day of vote counting. He had a strong lead, and then suddenly on the last day the results seemed reversed (they sited a final vote count/tally)– the Voting Commission (ECK)  has confessed that they were under pressure to declare a winner. This has only fueled violence, hatred and bloodshed in Kenya. Again, the main group being targeted is the Kikuyu group- its some kind of guilt by association dynamic, which is a key feature of Africa’s tribalism/tribal hatred sentiments. The opposition candidate namd Raila Odinga is a member of the Luo tribe based mainly in Western Kenya.

Here is a link to another missionary, based not far from Eldoret Kenya.

http://dlipparelli.blogspot.com

We encourage you to read his blog, and keep Kenya in your prayers. Sharon Senin’s family has been touched by the violence, not be able to leave their respective homes in Nairobi and Nakuru, for fear of violence (Sharon spoke with them on the telephone). We have contacted our sources in Kenya and were told the situation was so dire, that airlines in Mombasa were allowing tourists to depart from the country, without an airline ticket. John Senin and Rex S. are postponing their January 8 ministry trip to Kenya, until further notice.

The best thing we can do is to stand and agree with Jesus’ intercession for Kenya:

“Lord we plead your precious blood- the Blood of God, over the sins and needless bloodshed in Kenya- send the Spirit of peace and wisdom now to the government, in Jesus’ name- turn the nation, heal and forgive them. We are asking for your help Holy Spirit.” — John and Sharon Senin

Run towards, not away

December 21, 2007 · No Comments

I had a great experience the other day with our daughter. We were on the Gulf Coast playing among the waves. It was her first time being on the seashore. She would run towards me, as I was meandering in and out, going perhaps 5 meters out and then back to the shore. I would pick her up and then go out …. and then a few times I tested her. I ran ahead of her a few feet, and she was a bit scared. Yet as long as she could see me close, she would persist and we would continue farther out into the ocean (past the point she was comfortable going alone). It reminded me of some truths about God’s gentle and gracious nature.

Storms and waves can represent difficulties in our lives that ’strike’ us. It is true that without the knowledge of His nearness to us, we flounder in fear, insecurity and introspection. Dear friend, know today how close He has become to you today- believe and do not doubt! Do not guage this preciousness by other people’s opinions, words, or the difficulties around your life. Like the waves and the little girl, He may only be a few inches away. He is a Person, this God we love and trust. Do you know that People like Him enjoy being pursued? Did you know (unless you are a computer/robot) that this is the nature of love- to set other priorities aside and esteem the Person as the highest?

Adam sinned an ran away from God. King David sinned an ran towards God. He came boldly into the Holiest, most fearful place that priests walked tenderly and carefully.

Friends, let us become like David, not Adam. Run towards Him and not away from Him. Don’t be deterred or distracted from love, by silly things like waves or the accusations in your own heart. When are we ever going to be perfect enough to be with God? You see, this thing is not based upon our behavior! Our brilliant Savior builds the entire covenant upon His abilities- all we have to do is truly be baptized by His love, believe…. and let him carry us in and through the waves. He will not let you drown!

Here are some promises you can bank on:

“Therefore, having boldness to enter the Holy Place by the blood ofle Jesus by a new and living way which He made for us…. let us Come near to Him …” -Hebrews 10:19-20

“Come near to God and He will come near to you….” -James 4:8

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you..’ Therefore we boldly say, “The Lord is my helper, what can man do to me?” -Hebrews 13:5-6

What glorious love is this, that He should call you ‘Child of God?’” -1 John 3:1

It is not cocky nor presumptious to say that God loves you.  It is a revelation of profound magnitude- bottomless, unending and infinite. The same person who wrote the last Scripture above, wrote in another one of his books:

” Then Peter, turning around saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned upon His breast…”

-John 21:20 (He writes this about himself, 5 times in his own Gospel)  I thought it was a little arrogant of the Apostle to write this… then I realized that it is the very foundation of our relationship with Jesus.  It is the anchor for our souls, and as we revisit this powerful truth, sin, self consciousness and insecurity gradually fade away.  What is left is only love , the very reflection of His passion for you or me.  When  you are procuppied with love, it takes ‘work’ to get distracted by lesser, unworthy things (sin).

Let us all become like John the Beloved, and write this in our own book!

This is a picture of the region, climate and vegetation that is in much of Central Kenya. It is these kinds of rural areas that we are most interested in seeing the Church strengthened and rooted in the power of God.
